Ice Age Trail Community Committee

In the summer of 2015, the Village of Hartland, its Downtown Business Improvement District and a number of local interested individuals enthusiastically embraced an effort to highlight the connection between the Ice Age Trail and the Village of Hartland and its downtown in particular. The Village sought and became designated as the very first Ice Age Trail Community in Wisconsin! Hartland was selected as an Ice Age Trail Community because the Village enjoys the presence of the Ice Age trail through the Village's entire length and is devoted to ensuring that the Trail is as accessible as possible.

The Ice Age Trail Community designation is granted by the Ice Age Trail Alliance, whose mission is to create, support and protect the Ice Age National Scenic Trail; a thousand-mile footpath tracing Ice Age formations across Wisconsin. The Trail Community program is, at its heart, a cross promotion relationship between the Village of Hartland and the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Through the Ice Age Trail Community program, the Village and the Alliance envision a partnership through which the Trail and the Alliance are promoted in the community and the local residents grow in their understanding of the Trail and its significance to the history and geology of Wisconsin and the region while, at the same time, awareness of the Village, its amenities and events improves throughout Wisconsin and beyond through the broader interest in the Trail.

In January 2016, a Village Board Resolution (PDF) created the Ice Age Trail Community Committee as "a committee of area residents and other interested parties to undertake the tasks associated with planning and executing the Village's participation in the Ice Age Trail Community program and to serve as a general advocate for the Ice Age Trail in Hartland." The seven members of this committee and those other interested individuals that work with them will coordinate the Hartland community as it cross-promotes itself and the Ice Age Trail. While there are seven official members, there is plenty of opportunity for involvement and membership is not limited to residents of the Village, although residents are given preference for actual committee appointment.
